The Candidates
Georgetown
For Gtown
- You could make the argument that Georgetown has been the best team in college basketball since February 1st
- Junior trio of Roy Hibbert, Jeff Green and Jonathan Wallace are the most talented and experienced trio outside of Florida
- Disciplined Princeton-style offense difficult to prepare for on short notice
Against Gtown
- Might be too good at this point to be considered an "it" team
Texas A&M
For A&M
- Defensive-minded team with one of the top coaches in all of college basketball
- Acie Law is the type of clutch star player a team needs to win a National Championship
- Have other scoring options outside of Law in Kavaliauskas and Jones.
Against A&M
- The bandwagon has been full since January
Southern Illinois
For SIU
- Best Mid-Major with experienced starters from previous tournament runs. Will be rewarded with a 3-4 seed
- SIU is one of the overall quickest and best defensive teams in all of the country
- Jamal Tatum, who seems like he has been at SIU for 9 years, is a terrific player
- Have not fared well in March recently (First round exits in 04 and 06)
- Not sure if they will have enough offense to win four straight
Winthrop
For Winthrop
- The popular pick to be this year's George Mason
- Four losses this season were close calls to Wisconsin, Texas A&M, North Carolina and Maryland
- Return all five starters from a team that almost upset 2-seed Tennessee last March
- Pick is too trendy. It seems like everyone and their brother likes Winthrop to make a run, never a good sign (ask Gonzaga in 2002)
- The season has been defined by tough losses to quality teams, but not by actual victories
Maryland
For Maryland
- The Terps seem to be heating up at exactly the right time
- All five Terp starters average in double figures, good luck shutting them all down at once
- DJ Strawberry is finally living up to all of the hype and looks poised for a big postseason
- Bad loss to Miami in ACC tournament might bring all of that momentum to a halt.
- Shaky on the boards and not very big inside.
Other possible candiates: Washington State, Virginia Tech, Memphis, Oregon
Who is going to be my "It" team?.........Texas A&M (Can't hop off the wagon at this point)
Give me your "It" teams in the comments......

You and I are riding the A&M bandwagon together, buddy.
Is there room for one more?
what about the Irish? if they catch fire, look out, they can put up a ton of points on anybody
I've also been all over A&M and G'Town's nuts since the middle of the season, but they seem too cliche at this point.
I'm going to take Texas, simply because this is Kevin Durant's last audition to put definitively put himself ahead of Greg Oden. Pair that with DJ Augustin's play of late and I'd be legitimately scared to play them.
This topic is best for after the brackets come out, when people start identifying those marginal teams that can come out of those marginal brackets. Some pre-bracket favorites of mine are: Memphis, Tennessee, and Texas.
Im thinking Virginia Tech, senior led, experienced team, and always shows up for the big games (yet they get spanked by NC State)
Sanchez - sign up man
Re: anonymous
I'm not a huge fan of Memphis at this point, simply because I like the idea of being battle-tested. They're only 1-3 against the RPI top 50. I love their athleticism, but can't seem to convince myself they can win that close game in the tourney.
Notre Dame for me. Teams that can shoot the three that well are always in games. See West Virginia 2005.
Virginia Tech and Tennessee strike me as those high-major teams that get a 5 seed and lose to the 12 seed.
Georgetown and A&M are too good, and taking a mid-major is too easy.
Don't sleep on Louisville. Cards are one of the hottest teams in the country but may be a year away from final 4 territory
I definetly considered Notre Dame.....they can shoot as well as anyone. They remind me of West Virginia two years ago. They seem to be playing well at the right time as well..
BYU is an overlooked team that could do some damage depending on their seeding. They have the MWC player, coach, & freshman of the year, they play good D, can play up-tempo, and can score from outside or inside very well. I think a run to the Elite 8 isn't out of question if they can keep playing good D.
Pitt. Did you see them put the smackdown on L'ville at the beginning of the 2nd half?
I've been on the Notre Dame, Texas, Michigan St., and Maryland bandwagon for a while... I'm not feeling so good about the Spartans and Terps after the tournies, but I'm loving Notre Dame and Texas right now.
I'm riding the Wichita State train all the way to the Final Four!
Wait...
D-U-K-E DUKE.DUKE.DUKE thats where it's at man. This year's darkhorse for sure! Coach K is a God
Seriously, people are still picking Winthrop?? Did you see their loss to Davidson? And do you know Davidson currently has the longest winning streak in the country?
CLOSE losses to UNC, UCLA, and Duke at the beginning of this season. Almost knocked off Maryland in the first round of the NCAA last year--and everyone has returned for this year's team. RPI of 38. (realtimerpi.com).
I'm picking Davidson to go at least to the sweet sixteen.
